OctoOptic is a sculpture that represents both an anatomical specimen, the octopi, (octopoda) and the scientific instrumentation (the lens) used in its observation. The relationship between the observer and the subject, the viewer and the viewed, is compressed. Physically, organic and biological are translated through a direct silicon and wax molding of the specimen and the man-made via metal and acrylic components. This sculptural form combines hot glass, blown into a plaster waste-mold (cire perdue method) with hand-forged and fabricated aluminum lens elements.
