Irideae (Iris)

I began this piece by creating paper cut out stencils of Iris petals and Iris leaves, then sifted Bullseye glass powders into the stencils directly on to a pre-kiln washed shelf. I then fired those at a low tack temperature and again over small plaster slump forms I have created to achieve folds in the petals. I then pulled Bullseye sheet glass into the rods that would make up the stem. I then curved the stem on the flame working hand torch and attached each petal and leaf individually. Once all of the joints cooled, I reinforced each joint with a small amount of HXTAL. I then sculpted the Iris bud and attached it to the second stem. For the base, I cold worked a scrap piece of a lost wax cast glass and used a dremel to drill a hole for the stem to sit.
