Botryocladia Pseudo Dictome - Sea Grapes

Botryocladia Pseudo Dictome - Sea Grapes, Botany
Botryocladia Pseudo Dictome - Sea Grapes
Medium - glass: hot sculpted, kiln cast
Botryocladia Pseudo Dictome (botryo = grape, cladia = branches) grows in tufts and mats in lower tidal habits, tidepools, protected rocky shores, and bays. It is basically a red algae that grows in cool waters of the ocean. It's pear-shaped bulb floats rather than lying on the ground. It is assembled similar to a bunch of grapes, hence its name "Sea Grapes".
I chose this plant because of its beauty, movement, and texture. It is assembled in such a way that resembles other pieces I have done. The color is outstanding. I have that same color in glass and I have been waiting for the right way to use it best. The stem is coated in the same persimmon color as the pods as I noticed in some of the photos the stem are red and in some they are brown. The pods are a mixture of a yellow and persimmon. The base is kiln formed to resemble sand, rocks, and air bubbles.
