"Master of Disguise" - Octopus Vulgaris

"Master of Disguise" - Octopus Vulgaris, Zoology
"Master of Disguise" - Octopus Vulgaris
Materials: Flame-worked borosilicate glass, Hawaiian Koa wood, stainless steal.
Living in Hawaii, I am inspired by life underwater, and especially that of the octopus which masterfully creates a myriad of color choices on it's skin with which to camouflage itself. When I do get the lucky chance of spotting one, usually because I catch it moving from one rock to another, I am amazed at how quickly it changes both color and texture of it's skin to match that new rock or coral color. I also love the fluidity of the octopuses movements of it's eight legs. So much opportunity to capture graceful lines into the glass as I make it. My process of creating the octopus starts with clear borosilicate glass layered with a translucent, white, translucent yellow, then five different colored frits to create a dynamic skin tone.
