Naked Lungs: Quiet Strangers
Mexichromis multituberculata, a species of dorid nudibranch. Nudibranchs are strikingly beautiful sea slugs, or gastropod mollusks, that come in a wide range of forms and colors and are found all over the world.
Flameworked borosilicate glass. The kelp leaves are an artistic suggestion to represent the underwater environment.

Bio
Madeline Rile Smith uses glass as a performative vehicle to consider notions of intimacy, compromise, and embodiment. Informed by her background in music, she creates objects and videos that explore connection and isolation. Her experience of chronic pain is used as a generative force in her work. Madeline’s work has been exhibited in venues throughout the US and internationally, and has been featured in New Glass Review 41 and 35. She earned an MFA in glass at Rochester Institute of Technology, and a BFA in glass from Tyler School of Art. She is currently an adjunct professor of glass art at Rochester Institute of Technology. Madeline has instructed glassworking in schools and institutions throughout the east coast, including UrbanGlass and Salem Community College.
