Koi - gray and black

Koi - gray and black, Zoology
Koi - gray and black
Common name: Koi, Latin name: Cyprinus carpio, Mediums: Cast glass.
Growing up in Japan, and later when we lived in Japan together, koi fish were part of our daily life, seen on the way to the train station, at the park, near the studio. Koi have become both a memory and our symbol of our time in Japan - a colorful, natural presence in a dense urban environment. We wanted to capture the feeling of surreptitiously seeing koi in our recent series of work. Eric Cruze + Tomo Sakai

Bio
Born and raised in Japan, Tomo Sakai discovered glass when she was a teenager. After graduating from the glass program at Tama Art University in Tokyo, she moved to a small town in the glassmaking region of the Czech Republic to study glass engraving. After 3 years of study, she moved back to Japan with her husband, Eric Cruze, to establish a public glass studio in Gifu. Later Tomo and Eric moved to America, and established their studio in Worcester, Massachusetts. They make glass tableware, jewelry, sculpture, and public art. Tomo also does coldworking for other glass artists, and teaches engraving classes. In 2016, Tomo became the first cold worker-in-residence at the Studio at the Corning Museum of Glass. She continues to teach at Corning, often with the glass artist Martin Rosol, every year.
