Moon Shadow
Latin name: Maclura Pomifera I've always been fascinated with Hedge-apples (also known as Osage Orange, Hedge Ball, Green Brains or Mock Orange) with their intensely textured skin and unique form both of which reminds one of a human brain. The best way to capture the skin of the object was to cast them in glass. Separate plaster & silica molds were made for each piece and system 96 casting glass was used. I found the finished pieces to look like glowing orbs, almost moon-like. I placed them near the river not far where they originally feel from the tree. They began to take on a life of their own, inhabiting the space in a very natural, organic way - looking almost as if they belonged to this world. This was my first glass casting class at the Cleveland Institute of Art and now I'm hooked on glass. I find the ethereal effect of glass is astounding as well as soul crushing.
