Aequorea Victoria - Crystal Jellyfish

Aequorea Victoria - Crystal Jellyfish, Zoology
Aequorea Victoria - Crystal Jellyfish
Aequorea victoria, also sometimes called the crystal jelly, is a bioluminescent hydrozoan jellyfish, or hydromedusa, that is found off the west coast of North America. The species is best known as the source of two proteins involved in bioluminescence, aequorin, a photoprotein, and green fluorescent protein (GFP). Their discoverers, Osamu Shimomura and colleagues, won the 2008 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their work on GFP. My model is based on photographs of the species and is rendered mostly in clear and white glass. However, I have also included a ring of ultra-violet fluorescent glass around the bell to represent the green fluorescence.
